Part I. Social Work and Children's Rights
Part II. Social Work, Disability and Inclusion

Inhalt

Abstract:

CONTENTS

The course consists of two main parts (altogether seven modules) and two additional modules (excursus) which you can study separately or jointly. All modules include materials such as text, videos, photos, and activities. At the end of each module, there is a list of suggestions for further readings, as well as a discussion forum for sharing your thoughts, ideas, and comments regarding the contents and activities.
The first part, entitled Social Work and Children's Rights, provides an in depth introduction to universal children's rights, comprising the following five modules:
- Convention on the Rights of the  Child
- Childhood in a Global/Local Context
- Play, Education, and Work
- The Sense of Belonging
- Children´s Rights Education

The second part of the course, entitled (Dis-)Ability and Inclusion, comprises two core modules focussing on the UN-Convention on the Rights of Disabled Persons (CRPD). After you have learned in depths about the Children's Rights Convention, you are now ready to broaden your perspective. You will get to know more about the UN, the historical development of human rights protection at the UN on the basis of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights (1948) and the CRPD, introducing the following topics:
- the foundations and general principles of work of the United Nations and its main organs
- an in depth introduction to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (the historical basis for all human rights treaties and conventions)
- human rights principles i.e. equality and non-discrimination
- the right to inclusive education and human rights education.

Furthermore, as part of an excursus, two additional modules are provided for all learners who are interested to deepen their knowledge using an approach of historical learning in human rights education. You are free to use them but they are no prerequisite for studying this course or taking part in the exams. Starting from the idea that the modern understanding of inclusion in Germany is strongly influences by experiences of extreme injustice during the Nazi dictatorship and the atrocities of World War II, these two additional modules provide knowledge and understanding of historical developments before, during and after the war concerning the situation of disabled people:
- Disability, illness and euthanasia in Nazi Germany
- Euthanasia and forced sterilisations
- Dealing with war crimes in post-war-Germany
- Civil society organisations and initiatives e.g. the `Association of Victims of Euthanasia and Forced Sterilisations`

Detaillierter Inhalt:

Part I: Focus on Children?s Rights
In the first part, students will learn about the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UN-CRC) and its three optional protocols. This part will also focus on the history of the convention, as well as its implementation tools. Furthermore, we will discuss the issue of cultural relativism and globalization regarding childhood with a special focus on gender inequalities and the situation of female children around the world. As a next step, the importance of play, education and the role of work in children's lives, is portrayed, and students shall discuss if children should have the right to work or not. Also questions of the right to identity and its impact on children's sense of belonging will be a focus, followed by a focus on the situation of migrants, street children, as well as children of war. Finally, human rights education as a tool for promoting children's rights will be discussed and its various features will be elaborated on.

Part II: Focus on Disability and Inclusion
The second part of the course comprises two core modules focussing on the UN-Convention on the Rights of Disabled Persons (CRPD).

Excursus: Additional Modules
Although many students have a sound general knowledge of the history of Nazi Germany, the specific focus on the situation of disabled children, youth and adults discussed in these modules might be new for many, and will include new perspectives for almost all learners.  These two additional modules, Disability, illness and euthanasia in Nazi Germany and After the War in Germany (1945 - Today) focus on historical learning, and therefore discuss important developments that inform our current understanding of inclusion and inclusive education. They have been developed on the basis of the Online Manual "Inclusion as a Human Right? of the German Institute for Human Rights, compiled and conceptualized by Dr. Meike Günter with Dr. Uta George as one of the main authors (see: www.inklusion-als-menschenrecht.de). All original German documents used in this course have been translated especially for this module.
