Inhalt

Abstract:

This course is designed to provide students with basic theories, concepts, and methods of the Lean Startup. The course does not require any prior knowledge and can be attended without specific prerequisite courses. In addition, the case studies and exercises are selected and worked on in a way that gives different insights into the topic in different industries and functional areas. The course is thus interdisciplinary in nature and suitable for students of many disciplines.

Lean Startup encompasses a certain theory with which companies can be founded while keeping all processes as lean as possible. The main goal is to create a successful company with as little capital as possible and not to spend precious time on conceptualization, but to develop a prototype as quickly as possible. The product cycle should be reduced so that changes can be reacted to quickly.


The course starts with an overview of the basics of Lean Startup. First, the central terms are explained, their historical development is shown, and the necessity of the topic is derived on the basis of changing circumstances. Thus, Lean Startup is established as a way of thinking. Based on these fundamentals, organizational and personal prerequisites for the implementation of successful Lean Startup processes are then introduced and deepened. Based on this, the Lean Startup process is explained and practiced in detail step by step.

Detaillierter Inhalt:

1.1 Introduction to Lean Startup
To begin with, we will show you where Lean Startup originated and how the concept became so well known. We will also familiarize you with the methodology on which Lean Startup is based and take a look at two important terms of the Lean Startup concept, namely "Entrepreneurship" and "Management". At the end of the chapter, we will define startups and entrepreneurs.


1.2 Learning processes

In the second chapter, we will define the term "Validated Learning" and look at different methods for this concept. In addition, we will show you the implications of Validated Learning.


1.3 Experiments

Here, we will look at experiments in Lean Startup, which are a core component of Validated Learning processes. To do so, we will take a closer look at hypotheses, which form the basis of every experiment, and also explore how experiments are constructed.


2.1 Leap

In this chapter, we will look at the topic of strategy in Lean Startup. For a better understanding, we will also discuss the concepts of value and growth in the Lean Startup context. Lastly, we will examine the role of customer understanding for a successful startup.


2.2 Testing

Here, we will first recap the role of testing for a startup. With that, we will then introduce our main topic for this chapter: the Minimum Viable Product (MVP). We will explain the defintion of an MVP, its target groups, and the meaning of quality in terms of MVPs. To conclude the chapter, we will address the challenges an MVP entails.


2.3 Measuring progress

In this chapter, we will introduce "Innovation Accounting", which forms the cornerstone of measuring a startup's progress. We will take a closer look at the process behind the concept and address the difference between vanity metrics and appropriate parameters in Innovation Accounting. Moreover, we will define the characteristics of an appropriate parameter.


2.4 Pivoting

In chapter 2.4, we will define the meaning of "pivoting". We will then show potential obstacles for a pivot and introduce different pivot types. Finally, we will look at business model innovation and how it can help startups to pivot.


3.1 Growing

In this lecture, we will explain the concept of small batch sizes in Lean Startup. Furthermore, we will discuss different sources of growth and define the three growth engines.


3.2 Adapting

We will start the last chapter by introducing the topic of "adaptability" in general. Next, we will learn about the "Five Why Analysis" and how it can be applied in practice. Last but not least, we will take a look at the innovative capacity of companies.

  • Basic concepts: The students can explain the main concepts of Lean Startup.
  • Requirements: The students are able to name organizational and personal requirements for executing successful Lean Startup processes.
