Abstract:

This course provides students with a broad overview of data collection methods in the social and behavioral sciences. The goal is to prepare students to write a thesis in which the collection and/or evaluation of primary data on individuals, groups, or organizations plays a key role. Students will therefore learn where to find these methods and how to evaluate them, but will also gain insight into their application in scientific research. Furthermore, examples from HR, organizational psychology and consumer research will prepare them for using the methods appropriately in their future careers.

The course is offered in a 3 ECTS version and in a 6 ECTS version. You will receive more detailed information inside the course.

Detaillierter Inhalt:

In the first session, basics of data collection in the social and behavioral sciences are recapitulated (quantitative and qualitative research paradigm, research designs and objectives, quality criteria in empirical research, etc.).
The second session gives an overview of the prototypical research process: Students will learn which steps are required from choice of a research area and topic to literature review, development of research questions and hypotheses, operationalization and research planning, to data collection, preparation, analysis and interpretation.
Part II is the main part, in which the actual data collection methods are presented comprehensively. These are:

• interviews and surveys
• ratings, judgments, and comparisons
• psychological tests
• observations
• simulations
• unobtrusive measures

In this part, each session contains an introduction to the method, its theoretical basics and scientific application, as well as examples of its application in the fields of HR, organizational psychology and/or consumer behavior.
The last session will acquaint students with basics on ethical and legal issues.

Learning Goals:

Students will gain an overview of data collection methods as well as learn how to find and evaluate them. In addition, they will gain some experiences with using them. One important aim is to prepare students for working on a thesis in which the collection and/or evaluation of primary data on individuals, groups, or organizations plays an important role.
