Abstract:

IsiXhosa is a Nguni language of the South-Eastern Bantu language family and became one of the official languages of South Africa in 1994. This online language course provides basic isiXhosa language skills in grammar, vocabulary, cultural background and conversation for beginners. The course has been developed in cooperation with the Anthropology Department of Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich and in close cooperation with the Department of African Languages at the University of Fort Hare (South Africa).

The course contains two parts:

Part 1 (Units 1-10)

Part 2 (Units 11-20)

NB: Part 1 only starts in winter (October).

Every unit is divided into three parts:

A. Learning Units, B. Vocabulary, and C. Grammar Background.

Detaillierter Inhalt:

This isiXhosa Online language course contains 20 units alltogether and it is designed for beginners without previous knowledge of the language.

Processing a unit requires the successful completion of the previous unit(s).

A. Learning Units
One learning unit contains five lessons, 1. grammar, 2. conversation, 3. cultural background, 4. vocabulary, and 5. a final test of the unit.

In between, there are several exercises which are meant to facilitate the learning process and self-assessment of individual progress.

Lessons and excercises are the vital core of the course and have to be done step by step in order to complete and succeed in the course.

The first course (Part 1: initial course), contains 10 units; the second course (Part 2: basic course), contains another 10 units. 

At the end of every unit, there is a test called "final quiz of the unit". Once passed, the learner can move on to the next lesson or unit or else, has to repeat the unit in order to master the contents of the unit.

B. Vocabulary
Vocabulary can be learned the traditional way for each unit (lesson 4).

Alternatively, the App ANKI which can be used on mobile devices is provided and vocabulary can then be trained independently from the units.

Audio files can also be used to practice pronunciation, a vital element for speaking isiXhosa.

C. Grammatical Information
This part of the units will help to gain a deeper understanding of the grammatical structure of isiXhosa.

Knowing grammatical structures of the language will also assist in relating isiXhosa to other African languages of the area and to develop skills in building own sentences.
