Detaillierter Inhalt:

This is an online skills course for students from all academic fields. This course is designed for the students that would like to go abroad to study and / or work and is oriented to the B2 level of the Common European Framework. English for studying, working and living abroad will concentrate on covering letters, email communication and banking, housing / accommodation survival skills with a touch of intercultural training.

In Module 1 the students deal with the topic of job advertisements, followed by how to do an individualized evaluation of their skills by performing a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis. By identifying their main skills, the students will be better able to address the job advertisements that are most suited for employment or work placement. The final portion of the first module is for the students to learn about how to write a covering letter. Throughout the first module the goal for the students is to learn and practise not only vocabulary but also grammar and word collocations. The students write a covering letter in the Module 1 exam.
Module 2 concentrates on the importance of written communication, mainly communicating via email. The students learn how to write emails to enquire, inform and reply to emails as well as how to confirm bookings and appointments. Vocabulary necessary for making appointments, helpful phrases for letter/email writing and the different email registers are practised throughout the course. The students write two emails as part of the Module 2 exam.
The last module concentrates on three areas: a) culture, money and banking, followed by b) housing and accommodation and concluding with c) information on health and well-being with advice on how to seek medical attention. The modules convey useful and practical information for the students to survive abroad. All pertinent information is included in a glossary, and there are accompanying practice exercises.  Vocabulary is explained and the students practise by doing exercises and tests. Vocabulary, collocations and the material presented are tested in the Module 3 exam.
The students need to complete all of the exercises in the material and glossary exercises and attain at least 50% in each module to be able to take the exam for that Module. All of the exercises can be done as often as desired but the module exams can only be taken once.
All students that complete and pass the course and all three modular tests will be eligible for a certificate of course completion and 3 ECTS points.
Students can opt to receive a "Teilnahmebescheinigung" instead of a certificate. Students must complete Modules 1 and 2 and all of the material and glossary exercises for Module 3. No ECTS points will be given to students opting for a "Teilnahmebescheinigung".
