Abstract:

Dear students,

we are very pleased about your interest and welcome you to the CLASSIC-vhb course Design Thinking.

So that you know what to expect over the next few weeks, the following will give you a brief insight into the structure, design and content of the course. This course was designed by Prof. Dr. Alexander Hahn (Nuremberg University of Applied Sciences Georg-Simon-Ohm, User Experience Research / Design and Marketing) and Prof. Dr. Thomas Groll (University of Applied Sciences Regensburg, Department of Strategic and International Management). Both have many years of experience with the Design Thinking method. In their courses, they not only pass on the theory of Design Thinking to students, but also apply the method practically in seminars, workshops and corporate projects.

Motivated by the growing importance of design thinking as a creative innovation method and its increasing use in practice, this vhb course was developed to provide location-independent access to the topic for a large number of interested students.

In this course you will learn basic theories, concepts and methods of design thinking. With practical case studies and exercises, you will gain insights into various approaches and applications of design thinking in different industries and functional areas. The course is interdisciplinary and therefore suitable for students of many disciplines. Previous knowledge is not assumed.

You can expect a total of nine chapters. The course begins with an introduction to the basics of design thinking. You will learn central terms, the historical development and the necessity based on changing frameworks. Based on the basics, in the second chapter you will get an insight into the theory of Design Thinking, which includes concepts, rules and principles as well as performance areas. We will then introduce you to the Design Thinking process, which consists of five steps: Emphasize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test. These five steps will be deepened and practiced in chapters three through eight. In addition to the most common methods and tools, you will also gain insights into practical applications for each chapter. At the end of the course, in chapter nine, you will reflect on what you have learned and connect it to related approaches.

Each of the chapters just described is structured according to the same principle. First, Prof. Dr. Hahn and Prof. Dr. Groll give you a brief introduction to each chapter and define learning objectives in an intro video. Then you watch the content of the presentation in H5P video format. All presentations are also available for you to download in PDF format. To give you an insight into how the Design Thinking method is applied in practice, we have interviewed practitioners in Microlectures.

The course is scheduled for 2 SWS and you will receive 3 ECTS upon successful completion.

We look forward to the course with you and wish you much fun and success!
