Inhalt

Abstract:

The One Health Core Competencies course consists of asynchronous online modules. The participants will be led through the theoretical foundations of interdisciplinary teamwork, systems thinking and the One Health approach through self-study with interactive elements on the Moodle-platform. Participants also see illustrative examples of current One Health problems. They will reflect and discuss on the One Health approach and solve a real-world One Health problem using an interactive problem-based learning method. The learned content will be reviewed in interactive tasks on Moodle. As a final assignment, participants will develop a written report – the “Mission Plan” for solving a One Health problem.

Gliederung:

Unit 1 – Interdisciplinary Competencies
Interactive content and tasks on interdisciplinary competencies in self-study

Unit 2 – The One Health Approach
Interactive content and tasks on the theoretical basics of the One Health approach in self-study

  • Systems Thinking in Health
  • History of One Health
  • Definitions of One Health and other holistic health approaches
  • One Health and the collaboration between disciplines
  • Examples of One Health challenges

Unit 3 – Literature Review

The participants are working on five provided scientific articles on the following topics of One Health in self-study:

  • Leadership, governance, and partnership
  • The Role of environmental studies in One Health
  • The Role of human health studies in One Health
  • The Role of social studies in One Health
  • The Role of animal health studies in One Health
  • For each article, interactive questions are answered.

Unit 4 – A One Health Problem
A realistic current One Health challenge on pesticide use is presented in an interactive video. The participants are asked to define underlying problems and work in three phases:

  • Phase I: unidisciplinary perspective
  • Phase II: multidisciplinary perspective
  • Phase III: interdisciplinary perspective

Detaillierter Inhalt:

IIn unit 1 “Interdisciplinary Competencies” participants focus on the personal and social skills for interdisciplinary collaboration. Interactive content and tasks are performed in self-study by reflecting on the own perspective and self-competences.
In unit 2 (“The One Health Approach”) the participants learn about the theoretical basics of the One Health Approach. Starting with the concept of ‘systems thinking’ to get an idea of what natural and social systems are and how they interact. Furthermore, the participants get a glimpse of the history of the One Health approach. We look at various definitions of One Health and get an insight into current discourses of representatives of One Health and similar holistic and interdisciplinary approaches in health. To illustrate the relevance of these theoretical basics they see some examples of One Health challenges and working fields of scientists.
Unit 3 “Literature Review” is designed to complement the previous two units. Here the participants get an insight into the exemplary discussions and reviews in the field of One Health.
In unit 4 “A One Health Problem” the participants work on a One Health challenge. An interactive video presents a realistic scenario with a thematic focus on the use of pesticides and its impact on human, animal and environmental health. The participants are asked to define underlying problems and work in three phases: In phase I the participants reflect on the topic and define the underlying problems from their personal and own disciplines’ perspective. Then, in phase II, the participants are encouraged to discuss the problems from a multidisciplinary perspective. In the final step (phase III) the participants develop a ‘Mission Plan’ with an interdisciplinary approach. During the three phases the participants learn to define problems, collect discipline-based information, search and read academic literature, discuss and integrate new ideas. Within the scope of this unit the participants are able to tackle the One Health challenge from a uni-, multi- and interdisciplinary perspective. With all of these experiences, the participants will be better prepared for interdisciplinary collaboration within One Health.
