Abstract:

Planetary crises — including climate change, species extinction, and pollution of air, water, and soil — pose the greatest health risks of the 21st century. For example, mortality is increasing due to heat waves; food security is declining following prolonged droughts; and mental health impairments arise after flood disasters or other extreme weather events. The increasing transgression of planetary boundaries by humans threatens to make these crises major determinants of the Global Burden of Disease in the coming decades.
At the same time, the implementation of effective countermeasures and education harbours great potential to reduce morbidity and mortality (e.g., through active mobility like walking and cycling, a predominantly plant-based diet, adaptation of the medical care and healthcare system).
Persons studying health-related degree programmes have the potential to actively shape the necessary transformation processes in various sectors (e.g., patient care, public health services, university teaching, research, policy advice), thereby contributing to a healthy and sustainable life for all. To meet these challenges adequately, graduates with sound knowledge will be increasingly needed in social, economic, and medical institutions, as well as in health promotion and prevention, in the coming years.
This vhb classic course is intended to provide an introduction to the complex field of planetary health. It demonstrates the role of changing global conditions and their impacts on disease, prevention, therapy and epidemiology within the framework of interdisciplinary and holistic approaches.
Due to its broad social relevance, the course is of interest not only to the main target group of students of health-related degree programmes but also to students from other disciplines.

Lern-/Qualifikationsziele:

• Understand the concept of planetary health and be able to reflect on its connections to global and public health
• Name and critically reflect on basic knowledge of global environmental changes and their diverse health effects
• Classify the biodiversity crisis in the current context and be able to recognise and assess the resulting health consequences
• Name, recognise and scientifically classify the changed dynamics of disease vectors due to global environmental change, and be familiar with treatment and prevention options
• Name nutritional strategies for an ecologically sustainable and healthy diet and discuss them critically, taking into account various actors (e.g., agriculture, industry, individuals)
• Evaluate areas of the health sector (outpatient and inpatient) with regard to adaptations to the consequences of global environmental changes, with a focus on the climate crisis
• Describe planetary health and the so-called great transformation as concepts for reducing health risks
• Identify specific transformation needs in different contexts (e.g., healthcare, public health services, local communities, personal living environment) and initiate and shape transformation processes themselves
